A Good Mentor is the Key to Success

A good mentoring relationship provides new employees and trainees with someone who will share their professional knowledge and expertise in the field. A good mentor is available to answer any questions relevant to the work. Good mentor-mentor relationships are a two-way street; therefore, if you want a good relationship with your mentor, you become a good mentor. This requires a real interest for your mentor and a willingness to do what is necessary to become a successful intern or new employee in the field.

The desire to share skills, knowledge and expertise: A good mentor is willing to learn what he knows and to accept if he is in professional training. Good mentors can remember what the start of the field was like.  A good mentor presents the personal attributes needed to succeed in the field. By presenting the mentor with what is necessary to be productive and successful, they demonstrate the specific behaviors and actions needed to succeed in the field.

Has a personal interest in the mentoring relationship: Good mentors do not take responsibility as an easy mentor. They feel invested in the official’s success. This usually requires a person who is knowledgeable, compassionate and possesses the attributes of a good teacher or coach. Excellent communication skills are also required. A good mentor is committed to helping those mentioned find success and satisfaction in the chosen profession. Good quality mentoring requires the mentor’s empowerment to develop their own strengths, beliefs and personal attributes.

Show enthusiasm in the field: A mentor who does not show enthusiasm for his job will not eventually make a good mentor. The enthusiasm is trapped and the new employees want to feel as if their job has meaning and the potential to create a good life.

Mentors are in a position to illustrate how the field is developing and changing and that, even after many years; there are still new things to learn. Anyone who feels stagnant in the current position will not make a good mentor. When starting out in a new career, people want to feel that the time and energy they spend learning will be rewarded and ultimately give them career satisfaction. Good mentors are engaged and ready to experiment and learn new practices in the field.

They constantly read professional journals and can even write articles on topics in which they have developed a certain experience. They are excited to share their knowledge with new people entering the field and take their role seriously in learning the knowledge of others. They can choose to teach or take part in courses to further develop their knowledge and skills. He enjoys taking workshops and attending professional conferences provided through the membership of professional associations.

The mentor will grow the most by identifying current strengths and weaknesses and learning how to use them to succeed in the field. A good mentor possesses excellent communication skills and is able to adapt his communication to the mentor’s personality style. A good mentor will also provide the mentor with challenges that will stimulate professional development and a sense of achievement in learning the field.
